Gay Marriage: Get With the Times!?

Just this week, Lady Gaga came out with a new single called: "Born this Way" (Click HERE for lyrics). One of the most controversial songs of this age. Many have compared her to Madonna. One lyric that stood out to me was "A different lover is not a sin." I interpreted the word different meaning the minority or not the norm. It made me think of homosexuals. I think Lady Gaga was trying to say here thast it is ridiculous for religions to make people feel "wrong" for being gay or lesbian. I definately agree with her in that sense. Why can we have inter-racial marriages yet not inter-gender marriages? It is wrong to hold predjudice against people for whom they choose to love. Lady Gaga is definetly being bold by writing this song, she sure has gotten a lot of heat for it, but I admire her for doing so. I think its time we are more accepting and non-judgmental of homosexuals. It is a persons choice of who they be with.

  1. Sarah-

I really liked the connection you made between Lady Gaga's new song and what we talked about in class, it was really interesting to read! I have just recently heard the song, and have to admit, the first time I listened to it, I didn't really pay attention to the lyrics. But after reading your post, I saw the song in a whole new light. I agree that it was bold of Lady Gaga to write such a song, but I too think it was admirable to do so. She is highlighting how judgmental our society seems to be. I believe that every person she be able to be with whoever they want to be, regardless of whether some think its "wrong". And I think you brought up a good point what you posed the question: "Why can we have inter-racial marriages yet not inter-gender marriages?" I would be curious to see what others think, because I myself I am wondering why that is...

  2. Just like what you and Brooks wrote I do admire Lady gaga for the messages she portrays. I honestly do not know why there cannot be "inter-gendered" marriages....Good why question... But I do think that there should be same sex marriage because who is to tell someone who/should they should love. Not only is marriage a public declaration and commitment between two people but it is also the rights that go along with it. There are I feel a lot of ridiculous laws that are restrictive and unjust for same sex couples. Overall regardless of whether or not you like lady GAGA's music, I feel like you have to hand it to her for having here voice and not being to be afraid of expressing who she is and what she believes in.
